Bob LeonardWe are very much looking forward to our 50th Reunion. Did I just write 50th? Treva and I have been married 44 years, have 2 sons, 2 daughters-in-law, and 5 grandchildren. We live on the northwest side of Indianapolis on a small lake and still enjoy good health. We typically spend a couple of months in Florida during cold weather and travel some during the summer and fall months. We are a bit into mountain climbing and will attempt to climb an 18 mile round trip up to Half Dome in Yosemite in June. Hope we recover by September 11 for the Reunion. My only real message here is to encourage everybody from the class to attend this special time of remembering a really terrific part of our lives. The Reunion Steering Committee has been meeting for several months as we begin to close in on details of the event. Hope to see you September 11 & 12. Also, why not let us know you are coming by submitting a little recap and picture using this part of the web site.

Sandy HuffmanI am still here on the West Side, living with Doug, my husband of 23 years. I retired from teaching junior high school science and then working in Home Health as a Registered Nurse to begin traveling. We have seen over 50 countries and have traveled to 49 states—only Connecticut is left to visit. I am active at Speedway Christian Church, singing in the choir and playing hand bells and serving on committees. We had to retire to fit all this into our schedules.
Two of my three sons live close by, so we watch grandchildren three days a week. Sometimes we have to go on vacation to get a rest! I am looking forward to seeing classmates from Speedway’s Class of 1960. Our 50th Reunion should be great fun! Sandy Huffman Hostrawser |
Jerry ZimmerI have lived in Boulder, CO since 1973. I continue to work on many projects and also work part time for an engineering consulting firm. I have two daughters and two grandsons and enjoy giving the grandsons challenging assignments. I recently gave each of them a web site and told them to figure it out!
Most of my spare time is spent doing a range of riding bicycles, hiking, and sometimes skiing. The years seem to really fly by, but I am having a great time learning new things. This year I plan to add another 5kw to my PV solar plant and build a 26ft geodesic dome greenhouse. I look forward to hearing from everyone and having a little information from each of you for our site. See you at the Reunion! |
Carole WrightMy husband and I moved to the Cincinnati area 5 years ago to be near our daughter and grandson. I retired from WellSpan Health in PA after 15 years as VP for Community Relations. I spend my time now as a volunteer consultant for Executive Service Corps of Cincinnati and as a board member of various nonprofit organizations. I love to play golf, and we travel quite a bit--Australia, New Zealand, Alaska, Hawaii, and, in the fall, a European river cruise. My fondest memories are still of Speedway High. I can't wait to see everyone and talk about what were truly "the good ole days."

John Carmichael & Charlene Eversole
Retiring from teaching French and Spanish to Ben Davis High School students has allowed time to spend with Diego and Paola our grandchildren.
Their parents, our son Matt and his wife Sofia reside in Speedway. So we are always in touch with our roots. A son Ken and his wife Ali live in South Bend. Andrew is in Seattle. Travel to many places has been a highlight. Our Seattle visits sparked an interest in hiking. Being in church choir is like singing with Speedway alumni. Life has recently been punctuated with volunteering(Grandma and beyond). John and I are heading into year 49 (not age). Planning for this reunion grows in its significance. It has been rewarding to again see and to hear about classmates, realizing what an important part of my life you have been. The reunion is being held where all of my family roots are nestled, Orange County. Some of my grandparents were involved in the prime era of the French Lick and West Baden Hotels. I’ve seen these landmarks almost disappear. Now, with no expense spared and much local support, both structures and their grounds are restored to their incredible beauty. The rich history here was a surprise. Another new retirement interest! I will be looking forward to seeing you. - Charlene Hi classmates, I have been using that expression for years and now it is for real. Retired from a data processing consulting firm after twenty-seven years, which was kind enough to pay for a MBA along the way. I still enjoy learning and am auditing a class at Christian Theological Seminary. It is great, no tests, no papers to write, interesting lectures, senior discount, plus I get to take advantage of huge software savings. Two of my sons introduced me to hiking and now I am hooked. Have done four, week long section hikes, on the Appalachian Trail and a couple of forty milers in southern Indiana since I retired. Got the old 10 speed out of the attic and dressed it up for touring. Joined three other touring cyclists on the KATY, a 220 mile rails-to-trails ride, late last fall and hope to do more in the future. Charlene and I have a small sailboat on Eagle Creek that we enjoy. Did you know the reservoir is nearing the end of its useful life and is filling in? How old does that make you feel? After making several trips to New Orleans to work on Katrina damage I found a real interest and have since joined a group of Habitat workers one day each week, when the weather permits. Another day each week is dedicated to performing whatnots at Speedway Christian Church, so along with family gatherings and travel I am able to keep reasonably active. - John |
Bonnie NorthIt's hard to believe we're so old we're having a 50th reunion all ready. Following is a little information about me.
Jim and I have been married 27 years and live in Brownsburg, Indiana. I have 3 sons and Jim has 2 sons and a daughter. Combined we have 14 grandkids and 6 great grandkids - it's a full house on holidays. In 2003 I retired from Daseke Insurance Agency, after 25 years, and found retirement is wonderful! It is great to putter around in the flowers, take long walks and go to fall festivals. We've been spending Januarys in Florida and enjoy going to Pigeon Forge, TN to the Smokey Mountains in the fall. - Bonnie North Freed |

It has been a busy fifty years since Speedway. After working very hard to graduate in the bottom one-third of my high school class I began an eight year journey to and through several institutions of “higher learning.” Valparaiso Institute, General Motors Institute and finally graduate school at Purdue University. All that time resulted in a wall full of paper and a 40 year career with General Motors in Aerospace Research and Development.
I retired in 1999 (Rolls Royce), again in 2000 (GM), and again in 2002 (Ivy Tech). I am currently puttering around as a consultant for Belcan Engineering a few days a week--best part time job in the country. Donna (Muncie - class of 1961, whom I married in 1963), my lifelong sweetheart, meanwhile accumulated a wall full of paper as well and spent 30 years in Special Education (Danville Schools, Wayne Township, and Indiana Wesleyan University) while raising two great kids, Franklin and Kelli. Both are thankfully educated, married, and live nearby in Avon and Plainfield. We have six grandchildren, five boys and one very spoiled girl. We enjoy traveling to the far reaches of the world and have especially enjoyed mission trips with our church that have taken us to Jamaica and Southeast Asia. One of my more creative hobbies has been developing my culinary skills along with my enjoyment of landscaping our home in Danville. - Bill |
Steve LookabaughAs you can see I finally got my '59 Caddy Eldo. It probably took GM (with Bennetts help) about 1 day to build and it took me over 8 years to restore. After graduating from BSU and teaching / coaching for 12 years in the Muncie area I have basically been self employed. I worked as a manufacturers' rep in Tennessee and Kentucky (some Indiana and Illinois) in the sporting goods industry for 30 years and with the very capable and invaluable help of my wife of 26 years, owned and operated a small resort and marina on a lake in south central Kentucky for 20 years, selling it in 2004. Sandy and I are avid ski enthusiasts and in our spare time (winters) we tried to ski as many mountains in the West and Canada as we could. We managed to ski 25 different mountains until 1996 when Sandy was diagnosed with Oligodendro glioma (a brain cancer made famous by Ted Kennedy) Obviously, Sandy, due in large part to several great doctors at Vanderbilt University Hospital, has fared much better but our skiing days are over.
I have two daughters and four grandchildren. (Two each) My oldest daughter graduated from Florida State University and youngest graduated from the University of Florida. (How about that for a rivalry.) Both started out in the teaching field and my oldest has since been employed in an education related field. Now being totally retired, I spend as much time as possible on the golf course. Sandy and I enjoy Actor's theatre in Louisville and are kept busy with our four remaining dogs. We have been active and now support our local humane society. In our 26 year marriage we have had over 30 dogs (and three cats) all of which we had to eventually bury, most of which didn't give way until old age finally got them. (Talk about a vet bill.) I am truly anxious and looking forward to seeing everyone. One note for all - If it comes to Indy a "must see" is "The Jersey Boys" - a musical depicting the life and songs of Frankie Vali and the Four Seasons. My daughter saw it in Orlando and said it was absolutely fantastic. Sandy and I are going to see it in Louisville in August. Now its time to use my chemistry background from Floyd Troth's class and try to turn some beer into urine. See you all! - Steve |
Leslie PotterI have been married to my lovely wife Peggy for 45 years. We have three children, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
After serving four years in the Navy I worked at Allison for twenty eight years retiring as a Journeyman Tool Inspector in 1993. I worked at Magna Tech as a quality engineer in Indiana until I had enough of the cold and moved to Florida in 1995. After moving to Florida I played around with different “fun” jobs until 2002 when I retired again, so I thought. We started our own lawn care business until 2006 when we decided we had enough of working and retired. Retirement "took" that time. We have been having fun ever since, golfing, traveling and whatever strikes our fancy at the moment. |
Ginny Mitchell50 years ago this week I walked through the doors of Butler University as a new student with dreams and hopes and goals abounding. In June 1964, BU issued me a B. A. degree and teaching certificate, and I was immediately jettisoned into the teaching field by signing a contract to teach English for the 1964-65 school year. Since then I’ve taught English and mathematics to students in grades 7-12, taught English as a Second Language and Personal Finance at Richland Community College, Richardson, TX, and served on staff for 7 years at The University of Texas at Dallas. I retired from UT-D as a project supervisor for four federal grants, in collaboration with nearby school districts, designed to educate homeless children and youth by paying their own teachers to tutor after school their homeless and other at-risk kids.
Additional challenging engagements were in energy and transportation. For example, I served Dresser Industries for four years as a technical services engineer, spending one of those years in the oil field testing drilling mud. Later I not only worked for Delta Air Lines in pilot crew scheduling at DFW Airport but also in reservation sales as a sales agent. Yes, I still fly free wherever Delta flies. I am blessed with four children and four grandchildren. Here my children and I are in Plano, TX, 2008, full of dreams and hopes and goals while having fun posing for the camera. I now live in Cave Creek, AZ, near the desert where sunsets are dreamy and animals abound. I’m hoping to drive my Forester north where it’s cool to do some fishing. Life is good. - Ginny Sharples |
